What is Postpartum Hair Loss?
Post partum hair loss usually occurs about four months after birth and is caused by a change in hormone levels. While many women experience this, it is one of the things in life that no one can prepare you for because it affects women to varied degrees. So it is hard to say what it will be like for you until you’ve experienced it.
There is one thing to look forward to though, your hair should be back to normal at around your sweet little baby’s first birthday!
That’s not so bad, right ?
In the mean time, taking care of your hair is very important given the fact that it is in a delicate place and you have very little time to spare especially if you have young children.
Here is a simple hair care regimen for women with curly hair.
General Tips
Avoid hairstyles with extra tension on the areas that are falling out. As you can imagine this will only be more distressing.
Continue taking your prenatal supplements to provide your body with the vitamins and minerals lost during pregnancy.
Drink lots of water; not only to support your breastfeeding journey but also because water is important for the hydration and strength of your hair.
Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillow case. It is worth preserving all your hard work by avoiding hair damage to those curls at night that we have worked so hard to care for during the day.
HAIR ROUTINE
Pre-poo
Some persons opt to pre-poo due to the benefits of restoring moisture and shine. It protects the hair from the harsh shampoo process and you’ll reap the benefits of whichever pre-poo products used.
Some examples include:
• Coconut oil
• Olive oil
• Homemade blends
• Store-bought masks
• Honey
• Bananas
• Whole fat yoghurt
Shampoo
You’ll need a shampoo to cleanse your hair at least once a week. This should be free of any sulphates, parabens or silicones.
Deep Conditioner
Deep Conditioning once per week does wonders for keeping your hair hydrated and soft.
Styling: The LCO and LOC METHOD
Your hair porosity will determine which you use. The LCO method works for The Low porosity momma while The LOC method works best for moms with high hair porosity. Which one are you?

Leave in
Some persons opt for water as a leave in, like myself but these days I am experimenting with leave in conditioners products to see which works best. It is fun to do and you get to see what your hair really likes.
Curl Cream or Gel
The purpose of the curl cream or gel is to seal in the leave-in used.
A gel is great especially if you prefer to do a wash and go. Eco styler is a great gel that provides excellent hold and curl definition and lasts for at least 4 or 5 days AND it is affordable. Despite always trying something new, I always always end up going back to it.
Oil
Opt for a light oil like sweet almond oil or Jojoba oil to provide shine to your curls.
Now that you’ve done your hair.
Time to try to maintain it for a few days.
To do this, use a satin bonnet or pillow case for sleeping and revive the curls in the morning with a spray bottle.
Would you add anything else to this routine?

Post partum hair loss can be a frightening and worrying experience and in those moments I thought of this quote from St. Padre Pio who said ” Do not worry about things that generate pre-occupation, anxiety and derangement. One thing only is necessary. TO LIFT UP YOUR SPIRIT AND LOVE GOD.”
