5 Ways to Save Money on Your Electricity Bill

You are now reading expert opinion guys! I got a significantly lower electricity bill this month so it would seem that I’m qualified to speak on this. Lol I’m not but thanks for sticking around anyway.

What I am about to share with you are the top 5 secrets to lowering your electricity bill.

1.Unplug your devices when not in use.

My uncle told me this one, apparently even when you aren’t using appliances, they still use current. Who would’ve thought?
Since then I unplug my washing machine when it is no longer in use. You can do the same for your appliances.

2. AC or Fan Timer

By setting a timer on your AC, you can have it running for only a few hours at night, that way you stay cool and save some money.
You can also have both AC and fan running at the same time but with a timer on the AC. When the timer ends, the AC shuts off. That way, the fan circulates cool air. It’s a WIN WIN!

3. Upgrade your appliances

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that an old appliance will use more energy than a newer, more energy efficient model.
If it is possible, consider upgrading one of your appliances and see the change waiting in your next electric bill.

This goes for your AC UNIT too. Do not forget to service them and to do a FILTER CHANGE. This can also contribute to a higher electricity bill.

4. Turn off lights when not in use

I think I can hear my parents voice in my head and I’m sure you probably do too. If there was a way to annoy Jamaican parents, it would certainly be for them to come home to a house where all the lights were on.
If you have a water heater, this applies too. Turn off when not in use. ( I preach to myself here).

5. Get out the house

Hear me out here.
Going to the park with some of your mom friends is a great idea to get some fresh air for yourselves and the children AND to tire them out for bedtime. It works, trust me. Just remember to turn off appliances before you leave home.

Finally, if you really want to save on electricity.

Go Solar

I think this is a solid investment and worth the $1.6 Mil.
Think about it, if you spend about 20k per month on your electricity bill monthly then you would’ve spent 1.6M over a period of about 6 -7 years.
If you switch to solar then you harness the energy from the sun which means you don’t have to worry about JPS or the Electricity company you use if outside Jamaica. You’d essentially use them as a backup during consistent rainy days.

Speaking of Solar Energy, there are cheaper ways to go solar if you are on a budget. I recently saw solar power banks that can run refrigerators, laptops and other small appliances. These come in handy especially during the hurricane season or during a power outage. Summing it up

Being at home with children means higher light bills. That’s just something we can’t avoid but where possible there are ways to save and these tips have helped us and I share them so they may help you too!
Each one, teach one.. right?

Being Salt and Light ?

Speaking of Light, Jesus calls us to be salt of the earth and Light of the world. I heard a Priest say in his homily that just as salt brings out the flavour in food, so should we strive to allow him to bring out the “flavour” in our lives by living it more fully.
An example of doing this is through works of charity.
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux said in her autobiography, “I see now that true charity consists in bearing with the faults of those about us, never being surprised at their weaknesses, but edified at the least sign of their virtue.”

Nowadays, the world seems dark and there is a temptation to fall into despair.

So how do we spread light?

We do this by working to become light ourselves. That way we can then radiate Christ’s light naturally.
By living a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control (Fruits of the Holy Spirit Gal 5 : 21-22 NIV ) we give hope to those around us.

Well that is all we have for today.
Thank you for reading!
I hope you’ll save some money from now on through these tips, but most importantly, remember the true light that saves of us all, the Light of Jesus Christ.

Great article! I practice a few of these tips and they definitely help to keep our light bill low. It also helps that ny neighborhood is pretty cool so we keep our windows open for cooling (the $60K I invested into meshing all the windows so we could safely do this without the mosquitoes & lizards was well worth it to me!).
